With the pressure of digital post-production and digital projection it is essential for cinematographer to have a system that gives control in dailies that reproduces the photography that is on the negative. Picscan Leader System is designed for this purpose. Whether the production is post produced and finishing digitally or prints struck for distribution, there will be no bad surprises as to the quality of processing, negative density or grain structure when the print is finally struck.
The Picscan System preserves the photography of motion picture camera negative in transfer to digital intermediate by creating a stable reference accessible to the colorist. A simple one numerator reference is used which can be easily communicated to the cinematographer.
Leaders are shot exclusively for each production in one 15-minute pre-production session. This enables production shooting formats, preferred exposure index, laboratory preference, and stock characteristics to be transferred to telecine within the system. Picscan FLS stabilizes and removes the time consuming and unstable process of gray-cards from the set.
At transfer stage Picscan enables the colorist to neutralize the telecine machine and set the films full dynamic, including black level (base plus fog) gamma, highlight, and the true RGB tracking. This preserves the negatives fidelity as photographed. Telecine gamma, as referenced by Picscan, can now be used as a virtual printer light value for easy communication with DPs. quickly producing dailies that are both exposure and color accurate, with framing and set-up reference for display devices.
Color timing is usually 50% faster, allowing greater finessing, with more efficient use of personnel and facilities. Rather than spending time reconstructing images, Picscan Film Leader System stabilizes the post-production imaging process including the final film-out scanning stage.
The Picscan Film Leader System is based on an extensive knowledge of film & digital technology and is not determined in setup by any chart pigments or by forcing predetermined values into boxes. Picscan architecture is instantly recognized in telecine and gives the colorist stable references as to the negatives content. The System uses only your stock at your exposure index and laboratory possessing which eliminates external variants and therefore provides an unprecedented stable reference for the delivery of motion picture images in post-production.
